To The Brethren of the Fifth District:

For the last month, Greater Boston Chapter DeMolay has been running a Texas Roadhouse Gift Card Fundraiser to benefit the Chapter. Our young men raised $398.00 for the Chapter in this event. We would like to take a moment to say, “THANK YOU” to all the great men of the Fifth District who helped us in our efforts. You are an inspiration to us all.

We wish you and your families the best of the holiday season and may you and yours have a prosperous and healthy New Year!

Norumbega Fraternity Lodge
3rd Annual Superbowl Party & Chili Cookoff
Sunday February 5th brought the greatest of all holidays - Superbowl LI in Houston Texas and the 3rd Annual Superbowl Party and Chili cookoff hosted by Norumbega Fraternity Lodge. Brethren and their families gathered in the Newtonville Apts beginning at 6pm to enjoy an evening of Football, Food and Fraternity. Nine contestants engaged in a battle of the beans; Crock pots filled to the brim with heat, flavor and one contestant used bourbon and maple syrup in his offering. Brethren from all around the 5th District joined the party as well as a member of Simon W. Robinson Lodge and the newest Brother of Beth Horon Lodge came to enjoy the night and watch the Patriots roll over Atlanta. Subs were brought from Mt. Hollis Lodge in support of their Angel Fund by Rt. Wor. Walter Hunt.

Though the first half was disappointing 21-3, ballots were cast for chili. Third Place: Julie Mandello whose husband Michael is Sr. Deacon of Norumbega Fraternity, Second Place : Bourbon Maple Chili from Bro. Skip Durham also of Norumbega Fraternity but, the big winner was Worshipful Joe Manzo of Garden City Lodge who’s chili was referred to as “THE GRONK” because after it burns you with the heat, it will blow a hole right through you. Congrats to Wor. Bro. Manzo!

The third quarter felt everyone descend in to the bitter depths of despair as  the Patriots fell to 28-3 and the crowd was ready to head home. The faithful who remained saw what was the Greatest comeback of all time! TB12 rallied to a tie at the end of regulation. During the final drive, everyone held hands as New England would not be denied and the team that the lead the Superbowl for 0 seconds crossed the goal line and brought a Fifth Championship to New England. A remarkable end to a great evening.

Farewell letter from R.W. Goldstein...
December 26, 2016
My Brothers,

In approximately 18 hours RW Paul Gleason, as our next Grand Master, will install about 22 new District Deputy Grand Masters, including a new DD for the Fifth District.  He is a man who has served Massachusetts Freemasonry for many years, in several capacities.  I know you will support him, as will I.

It has been a truly humbling experience serving as the DDGM for the 5th District for the past two years.  I have made new friends, renewed some old friendships, have met good men, and have been awed by the potential of the men of this District, and throughout the jurisdiction.  I have bent a few rules, allowed some “wiggle room” sometimes, and occasionally bordered on the irreverent.  I was devastated by illness, but through your friendship, caring, support and prayers I have been able to continue, with ever-increasing health and vigor, through these past six months of my recovery.

While my job has been to represent MW Harvey John Waugh to the Brethren of my District, I have advocated for the Lodges when I truly believed they merited it.  And although I have had differences of opinion with some of you from the beginning of my term, that did not prevent us from meeting, from breaking bread together, or from treating each other as true Brothers.  We did not always agree, but we acted respectfully, as gentlemen.  Who could ask for more?

In the Fifth District, and throughout the jurisdiction, Masons are unsure of the future of our Fraternity.  While our Grand Lodge is giving us tools to help attract good men, it is up to each one of us to help increase our numbers by bringing other good men to our Craft---men who will be active, who will participate, and who will live their lives following our basic tenets: Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.  As human beings our first job is to perpetuate our species.  So it should be with Masons.  Our first job is to increase our ranks by bringing into our Fraternity men of good character who share our values.  You know who they are.   They are your auto mechanic, your nurse, your neighbor, your letter carrier, your realtor, your surgeon, your plumber.  By sponsoring these fine men you will not only help Freemasonry, but you may help to change lives. As our Grand Master has said, “Make a Difference”.  And don’t forget our young people.  Support and nurture them.  They are the future of our Fraternity, and of our world.

My Brothers, for many of you this is preaching to the choir.  But I know that no matter what your rank, or your position, or your accomplishments, no eminence of station should make us forget that we are Brothers.  Because the time will come, and the wisest knows not how soon…  Be well, my Brothers.  Thank you for the past two years, which I shall always cherish.  I look forward to seeing you in Lodge and I look forward to supporting our new District Deputy and our Grand Lodge.

Fraternally and sincerely,
R.W. Joseph Goldstein
Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Fifth Masonic District
